Though not containing diacritic characters, it has many other benefits to offer in terms of features and functionality. Exploring this font's features, one finds that it has a much more complete set of glyphs including a lot of ligatures. For instance, compare the following two screenshots:As you can see, the new Shree kan 0851 font has a much larger character set compared to its predecessor. Most notably, it includes a lot of special conjunct letters and signs for mon-consonant syllables. This improves its usability because it allows for better word spacing and lends itself well to typography work. It also displays vowels with full-width characters (where applicable), which makes reading more pleasant and makes writing easier as well. A few other features worth mentioning are the fact that the font supports tabulation, which is a welcome feature given that it is very uncommon for Indic languages. Another notable feature of the fonts is its support for displaying Brahmi numerals.Initially, I was opposed to Shree kan 0851's omission of diacritics since they are supposed to aid in rendering Indic languages more accurately. However, after using the font for a long time, I have come to appreciate the simplification it provides. This is because it is an excellent tool for users who wish to write in Indic languages but don't know how to type Roman characters well enough to do so. And since Shree kan 0851 looks exactly like an Adobe-standardized font, it also avoids the confusion that typical usage of bundled Indic fonts can cause amongst non-Indian readers or casual users. Some examples of typical characters that are often overlooked by Western readers are given below:Hence, for people who prefer not to type Roman characters and typesetting work in Indic scripts, this font is a great solution. Since the font does not have diacritics, it cannot provide perfect rendering. This is a tradeoff that was consciously made by the developers of Shree kan 0851 since they wanted to create a font that would be as compatible as possible with other computer systems. Let's take a look at how this font renders the word 'khana' using its default settings:As you can see, the above screenshot shows that even though there are no diacritics present in the text, the small vowel marker above 'na' is lacking because it should appear above a consonant which precedes it. This means that there is less spacing between two adjacent consonants and words which causes some rendering issues.
